Kamakura Kabuto

I modeled a 9m sculpture of a Kamakura-period inspired Kabuto imagined in the Burning Man. I specifically wanted to build a kabuto to celebrate 端午の節句 (Tango No Sekku) which originally honored the health and wellbeing of children of Japanese warriors in the Kamakura Period.

HISTORY

The Kabuto was part of the samurai armor to protect the head during battle. People began decorating their homes with a kabuto as a way to protect themselves from natural disasters and diseases.

PARTS

There are five parts that make up a kabuto from the Kamakuro period: Kabuto Hachi, Shikoro, Maedate, Fukigaeshi, and Mabisashi.

EXTERIOR STRUCTURE

The shape structure mimic common kabuto silhouettes favored by people of the Kamakura period, especially the crescent-moon shaped maedate. The main exterior is made of iron steel and cotton fabric with traditional pattern. Embellishments on the kabuto lights up at night to emphasize the family clan.

INTERIOR STRUCTURE

People can enter inside the kabuto to see how the inner cushion of the hachi is structured for breathability and protection. They can enjoy a display-based bow-and-arrow game as they ride on the horse figurines, similar to the ones ridden by Kamakura-period warriors.
