The Getaway

Prana challenged me to design a capsule wardrobe consisting of five to six pieces, tailored for a tropical getaway destination of my choice. Drawing inspiration from three distinct patterns, I curated a collection for Okinawa, Japan—a region shaped by a rich multicultural history. Its unique cultural blend stems from Southeastern trade during the Ryukyu Empire era and the influence of American colonization following World War II.

CHALLENGE

prAna, the sustainable active wear brand
located in Carlsbad, gave us the challenge to design a capsule wardrobe collection for a tropical getaway. Numerous patterns and textures had to be designed for a concept.

TRADITIONAL WEAVINGS

The patterns were based on the three traditional weavings native to Okinawa, which were created in the 14th century. THE YOMI-TANZAN-HANAORI: Hand-woven style fabric that is created to wish for a loved one’s long life and wealth. The BASHO-FU: The weaving requires years to develop because it is made of Japanese banana fiber, Basho. The RYUKYU BINGATA: The most traditional textile that uses pigment instead of dye.
